Mission Week 67: Emiliano Zapata

Hey everyone! Hope you’re doing great! There’s a lot to cover this week so I’m just going to get right into it!
Transfers Last Monday transfers went pretty crazy. It was sad to leave Salina Cruz behind but at least at least I know it’ll be in good hands. The few of us getting transferred to Oaxaca City traveled in a tour bus there, but there was a horrible blockade and the trip went long by about 4 hours, so we left at 1:00pm and got there at 10:00pm. It was a long ride. We stayed the night in the mission offices and the next morning the transfers were announced.
Area I got assigned to an area called Emiliano Zapata. It is kind of a curious area because it is technically part of the “city” half of the mission, but it is absolutely not city. We are an hour and a half from Oaxaca City, and the area consists of a series of small towns that we visit and work in. We live in this tiny one called Emiliano Zapata, where there is a ward. However, a few towns over we also are in charge of the Zimatlán Branch. So we’ve sure got enough work, and a lot of travels. But it has been pretty fun up till now. Due to many missionaries arriving next transfers, I don’t actually know how long I’ll be here, but I’ll make my time count, that’s for sure.
Companion My new companion is Elder Torres! He is from a Mexican state called Tamaulipas bit lives in Mexico City right now. He has about 8 months on the mission and we’ve hit it off pretty well together. He is super friendly and a really hard worker, so I’m excited to be with him. I think it should be a great transfer.
September 16th Multizone Conference Despite there being transfers, this week also happened to have the special multizone conference for Mexican Independence Day, September 16th (NOT Cinco de Mayo). So after barely getting to our area, wr had to go back to the mission offices to sleep the night and head to the conference the next morning. The conference itself was great. I really feel pretty nostalgic because I could remember the conference last year like it was yesterday, but here I am now, done with the 2nd and on the way to Christmas. We were given a few trainings but the assistants, had a super good meal with Pasole and Taquitos, and then a really fun talent show. My district performed a kind of spoof on the story of Mexican Independence and it turned out alright. But some other districts had skits that were just hilarious and made every minute worth watching. The conference ended with President Martinez saying a few inspired words, and we then went to stay at the zone leader’s house for the night. It was quite a party that night for sure!
The Work The work here in Emiliano Zapata is crazy. There are so many places to go, but here in the town pretty much everyone knows the missionaries, member or not. So we do have to travel a bit to find and teach, but that is okay! Seems to be a common theme in the Oaxaca mission, traveling to find, jaja. We have a bunch of people in teaching that the other elders left for us, so hopefully a few of them progress and we’ve got some baptisms here in the next few weeks!
