Mission Week 44: Climbing Mountains

Hey everyone! I hope you’ve had a great week. It was pretty good here in Oaxaca and I’m certainly becoming more familiar with Salina Cruz and enjoying every second of it. This week was full of excitement with a few awesome lessons and a crazy exchange. In all, it has been a blast here and I can’t wait to see what comes of here!
Exchanges! This week we had exchanges with the district leader, Elder Tochimani, and I happened to stay in the area (only within a week of getting here). And it turned into a bit of a disaster. First, for the food, we looked at the calendar of which member was going to feed us, and read “Fam. Martinez Martinez”. So we headed to the bishop’s house because that should be his family. However, there was another family with the exact same name that literally lived at the top of a different mountain from where the bishop lives. This, meaning that we had to hike up two mountains in one day in the baking sun. Then, after the food, we had an appointment across the area but after taking the 30 minute walk, again in the heat of the sun, she wasn’t anywhere to be found. So a pretty rough exchange but at least we had a good time knocking doors and talking to less-active members.
Gerson and Jorge We have these two youths in teaching, Gerson (13), and Jorge(15). They are incredible! They have a super strong desire to learn and grow in the Gospel. They really enjoy the Book of Mormon videos and have been joining us for weekly playing of soccer every p-day. We have had a bunch of lessons with them and have a desire to be baptized and they have the full support of their mom who is also in teaching; however, their dad still has doubts about certain things and it is pretty hard to have lessons with him because of how much he works. So this is the difficulty. But! We had a wonderful appointment with them and some members who have quickly become their friends. So there is progress! We are super excited to keep working with Gerson and Jorge and their family!
Climbing More Mountains We also had the chance to eat with some members on Thursday and literally had to walk up a mountain to get to them. Then….! We found out that the granddaughter whose 11 isn’t baptized but wants to be, lives there too, so we’ll be returning pretty frequently to teach this girl, Lucero.
